Donations are urged amid a dire shortage of blood supply nationwide to support patients in need. In August, Vitalant, a nonprofit that supplies blood to about 900 U.S. hospitals, said strong patient need in previous months had depleted its supplies by nearly half, “creating an emergency shortage across the country.” Maintaining adequate blood supply has been difficult since the start of the pandemic, which prompted staff shortages and behavioral changes.
When people donate blood to Vitalant, they help hospital patients within their community and, when the need arises, others across the country, according to the nonprofit. Recently, Vitalant challenged Americans to “roll up their sleeves” and donate blood to support increased need stemming from Hurricane Ian.
According to the nonprofit, “All blood types and platelets are critically needed, especially type O, which is most often transfused. O positive is the most common blood type in the U.S. and O negative can be transfused to any patient.”
