Applications open for Midland Chamber’s Teacher Adoption Program

A great way to make a big impact on local education is to “adopt” a local teacher.

The Midland Chamber of Commerce is encouraging community members to participate in its Teacher Adoption Program. The program enables an individual, small group or family volunteers to “adopt” a teacher from public, private and charter K-12 schools in Midland.

That means participants regularly connect with their teacher via encouraging letters, care packages, meals, etc. Both the teacher and adopter commit to communicating monthly.

The Midland Chamber launched the program in an effort to support and retain quality teachers in the local community amid rising attrition rates. When 935 MISD teachers were asked in a survey to name the greatest challenges in their roles, the top answer was being new to Midland and loneliness. A lack of teaching resources and a lack of respect and community support also ranked high in their answers, according to the Chamber.

The application period for adopters opened Aug. 29 and runs through Oct. 3.
