Corey Recko to discuss ‘The Colfax County War’ at Reeves County Library

The Reeves County Library will feature Corey Recko, acclaimed author of The Colfax County War: Violence and Corruption in Territorial New Mexico, in a special presentation at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The library is located at 315 South Oak St. in Pecos.

Recko, whose previous works include the award-winning Murder on the White Sands and A Spy for the Union, will delve into the turbulent history of the Colfax County War, a pivotal conflict in New Mexico’s history marked by violence and corruption. His latest book, published by the University of North Texas Press, explores this dark chapter of the American West in vivid detail, shedding light on the events that led to a series of violent confrontations and political intrigues.

A key figure in Recko’s presentation is the notorious gunfighter Clay Allison, who is buried in Pecos. Allison’s involvement in the Colfax County War and his connections to Pecos make this event particularly relevant to local history enthusiasts and residents.

“The Colfax County War is a story of lawlessness and power struggles that had far-reaching consequences for the region,” said Recko. “I hope that by highlighting Clay Allison’s role and the broader impact of the conflict, we can spark a renewed interest in this critical period of New Mexico’s past.”

The presentation will provide an in-depth look at the Colfax County War, beginning with the assassination of Reverend F.J. Tolby in 1875 and the subsequent wave of violence that enveloped the territory. Recko will discuss the role of the Santa Fe Ring, a group of corrupt politicians, and the broader implications of the war on New Mexico’s political landscape.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Recko during a Q&A session and purchase signed copies of The Colfax County War. This event promises to be a compelling exploration of a dramatic period in American history and a unique chance to connect with an esteemed author.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Reeves County Library at (432) 755-0914 or visit our website at www.reevescountylibrary.org.
