Hobbs declares ‘Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day’ in honor of Olympian

Hobbs Mayor Sam Cobb proclaimed Sept. 3 as “Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day” in honor of the Olympian who graduated from New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) in Spring 2024.
Makarawu placed 6th in the 200m Finals in track at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
At a recent City Commission meeting, Mayor Cobb made the proclamation to congratulate Makarawu for his accomplishments.
Makarawu is currently attending the University of Kentucky. While he wasn’t present in person for the City Commission meeting, he live-streamed the event.
NMJC Director of Athletics Deron Clark was present to accept the proclamation on Makarawu’s behalf.
