Midland College student named Oberndorf Scholar

Adebisi “Princess” Saubana, a student in Midland College’s (MC) nursing program, was named an Oberndorf Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and received a $1,500 scholarship.

Every year, up to 15 Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarships are awarded to Phi Theta Kappa members facing financial barriers preventing the completion of their first college credential, associate degree or certificate. Phi Theta Kappa is the first honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges. It boasts over 4.3 million members and 1,300 chapters in 11 countries.

Saubana was born in Nigeria and moved to the U.S. to realize her dream of becoming a nurse, which she hopes will happen in May after she takes her state board exam.

Princess credited Phi Theta Kappa for helping her to become a leader and to be confident.

“Being in the nursing program has really empowered me to be able to read people and know I can take care of them and give back to society,” she said.

The Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship is named for its benefactors, Rosemary and Lou Oberndorf. Lou co-founded METI, a world leader in medical education technology whose products are used in many community colleges and medical schools, and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees.
