Midland resident a finalist in national contest to make prom gear from Duck tape

Midland resident Emma Chang has been named a finalist in Duck brand’s 23rd Annual Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest, during which high school participants from around the nation are challenged with creating prom dresses, tuxedos and accessories using duct tape.

In creating a tuxedo and prom accessories, Chang spent 75 hours and used 13 Duck Tape rolls, according to the company.

Her entry was among 200 nationally for the annual contest.

“Each entry met certain criteria— color, quality workmanship, originality, accessories, and the use of Duck Tape—to be selected by the contest judges,” according to Duck brand officials. “However, it was decorative details, such as lace-like fabric, and cultural-inspired styles, like a Native American headdress, that set these finalists apart from the competition.”

The designer of the Duck Tape dress and tux with the most votes will each win $10,000 in college scholarships. The eight runners up will each receive $500 scholarships and Duck brand prize packs valued at $100.

The people of the Permian Basin can help Chang win the grand prize by casting an online vote for her at StuckAtProm.com. Check back on the website around July 19 to see the winners.
