New murals a graffiti deterrent in downtown Odessa
The City of Odessa is becoming more vibrant by the minute, thanks to colorful new murals being installed by artists with the aim of curtailing graffiti on vacant buildings downtown.
The City of Odessa recently caught up with one of the artists, Taylor Barnes, a 31-year-old Monahans resident who is currently painting a close up of a jackrabbit and its eye, and also recently painted the ODTX lantanas next door.
“I’m so honored to do this,” said Barnes about the mural project.
The artist also took time to tell the city her advice for other artists looking to work full time: “Get out of your comfort zone.”
Barnes should know, she’s been a full time artist for five years, but recalls a time when her life was much different, according to the City on Facebook. The artist said she was living in a big city and working in the restaurant industry, noting that it’s hard and people can get stuck.
Barnes returned home and sunk everything she had into her art. And now? She’s living her dream and doing what she’s passionate about while working on a project that underscores the power of strong partnerships. Namely, Odessa Arts, Downtown Odessa and the City of Odessa working together to make our city a better place, said the City.
