Odessa boy, 8, wanted to learn to defend himself, becomes boxing champ
Jez Almance, 8, said he took up boxing at age 5 because he wanted to learn to defend himself.
These days, the young athlete they’re calling “Baby G” is more about defending titles.
According to the City of Odessa, which recently spotlighted the young boxer on social media, Jez is competing at high levels at his young age, having won the state competition in Dallas and also regionals in Arkansas. Next month, he is headed to nationals in Independence, MO.
“With God’s will, he’ll be ready for nationals,” Coach Jesus Almance told the City of Odessa.
It’s not just talent, but hard work that elevated Jez’s boxing game. He trains Monday evenings, Fridays and weekends and adheres to a special diet to meet his competition weight. He does cardio with his dad daily, 1 to 2 miles, according to the city.
Jez trains at Team Jab (Jesus Almance Boxing Club) located at 12020 W. 42nd St. in Odessa.
