Odessa’s Tabata Ayup to unveil mural honoring veterans
Odessa artist Tabata Ayup will unveil her newest mural honoring veterans in the city Fri., Nov. 10 at 10 a.m., just in time for the Veteran’s Day Parade, per the City of Odessa on Facebook.
Ayup told the City of Odessa that her great-uncle, who was like a grandfather to her, is a veteran and shared all his stories, making her “dream about what life and war were like at that time.”
Her piece honoring veterans features a bald eagle and the American flag behind the majestic creature. An inscription on it notes it was sponsored by the Heap family and also by the Ayup/Valenzuela family.
According to the City of Odessa’s Facebook post, Odessa Police Department Chief Gerke and Deputy Chief Doporto will be on hand for the mural’s unveiling.
The artist began her painting career 20 years ago working for the Mexican government. After a break to raise her three children, Ayup decided to pursue her passion for painting again.
Her work may seem familiar to Odessa residents; Ayup has created local murals in the past at Reagan Elementary, Vagabond and Devoted Grind. Her newest mural marks the first time Ayup has painted an outdoor mural.
“I feel blessed and protected in this country, especially in Odessa,” said Ayup.
Friday’s unveiling ceremony will take place at 117 E. 1st St. in Odessa. Check out the artist’s work on Instagram at @tabataayup_art.
