Richard McCalop Basketball Camp returning to Odessa

Richard McCalop Jr., a 2011 Permian High graduate and former Harlem Globetrotter, will hold his 2nd annual basketball camp in Odessa on July 15-16, the City of Odessa reported on Facebook.

McCalop played for Trinidad Junior College and also Southwestern Oklahoma State University. This past season, the 6-8, 30-year-old forward starred for the Reading Rebels, a professional team in The Basketball League, averaging 15 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 23 games.

He’s also becoming somewhat of a movie star. After seeing him dunking, Adam Sandler had McCalop appear in multiple scenes in his Netflix film, Hustle, according to both the city and a CBS7 report that profiled McCalop ahead of his first Odessa camp last year. In the report, McCalop expressed gratitude for being able to give back to the community where he was raised.

According to the City of Odessa’s Facebook report, McCalop can also be ssen in motion capture dunks in the video game NBA 2K, and he’s also in a Google Pixel Commercial. And his days on film aren’t over. The Rebels, a new team in the TBL, are set to release a documentary on their season.
