Star UTPB lecturer invited to join Academy of Distinguished Teachers

Much like a basketball player pushes the limit of physical ability on the court, UTPB English Lecturer Clark Moreland pushes the limit of innovation in the classroom. So it’s no surprise Moreland has been selected for the All-State Team.

UTPB recently announced that Moreland has been invited to join the prestigious UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers, which recognizing outstanding teachers across the System’s eight academic institutions. Moreland becomes among 34 Fellows tasked with advising UT System leadership and engaging in creative endeavors that improve student learning experiences in Texas and beyond. Moreland joins fellow UTPB Professor Sophia Andres as a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

“I am deeply humbled by this opportunity, mindful of the fact that many faculty in UT System are just as deserving (if not more!) of this recognition,” said Moreland. “I look forward to serving with my colleagues as we continue our mission of transforming our state through excellence in student-centered teaching.”

Moreland leads the Heimmermann Center for Engaged Teaching at UTPB, which aims to grow faculty into innovative teachers via workshops and curriculum support.

“Clark leads workshops on teaching in remote and hybrid modalities, and hosts presentations on service learning, undergraduate research, and other high impact practices,” said UT Permian Basin President Dr. Sandra Woodley. “As the father of a person with cognitive disabilities, he has a passion for sharing the principles of Universal Design of Learning with our faculty. He has built the Heimmermann Center into a hub for pedagogical innovation and culturally sensitive instruction. It is transforming the way teaching happens at UTPB. I have no doubt that Clark will demonstrate his willingness to go the extra mile for students and teachers in the UT System as a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers.”
