UTPB Falcons win first Lone Star Conference Championship in program history

The team that was picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll ended up winning the conference title on Saturday.

The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) football team (10-1, 8-0) continued its historic season at Astound Stadium on Saturday by defeating Central Washington to win the Lone Star Conference Championship.

The Falcons next advance to face Bemidji State (8-2) in the first round of the NCAA DII playoffs, which will be held at Astound Stadium in Midland on Saturday, Nov. 18, according to UTPB.

University officials encourage fans to “wear your orange and black and come cheer on the Falcons.”

The Falcons are ranked No. 16 in the D2Football.com Top 25 and No. 17 in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll. Their next opponent, Bemidji State, is ranked No. 12 in the latter poll.

This has been a season of many firsts for UTPB football, which is having its best year since launching as a program in 2016. Head Coach Kris McCullough, the nation’s youngest head coach at age 28, helped put his team in the national spotlight by elevating the culture, level of play and also the facilities for student-athletes at UTPB, according to The Atlantic, which recently detailed some of the reasons for McCullough’s early success.
