West of the Pecos Rodeo set for action-packed return
The West of the Pecos Rodeo will make its thrilling return to Buck Jackson Rodeo Arena from Wednesday, June 21 through Saturday, June 24.
Calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling are among the highly anticipated activities set to take place at the “world’s first rodeo,” which dates back to 1883. In 2015 and 2016, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association cardholders—the cowboys themselves—voted West of the Pecos Rodeo as one of the five best large outdoor rodeos across the country. The event was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2008.

This year’s festivities kick off with the annual parade at 10 a.m. organized by the Pecos Area Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The parade has citizens and organizations coming together on floats, on horseback and in vintage automobiles along the historic path from Highway 17 to the Reeves County Sheriff’s Posse Barn.
Then at noon, attendees can fill up at the Reeves County Sheriff’s Posse BBQ.
While the parade is free to attend, prices for rodeo performances over the three days vary by performance, from $9 to $15.
“Each of the 9 PRCA-sanctioned rodeo events offers two sections of bull riding and one section of bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and women’s barrel racing,” rodeo officials state.
