Museum of the Southwest to hold opening event for ‘Frida Kahlo – Her Photos’

The Museum of the Southwest is holding an opening presentation and lecture for the upcoming “Frida Kahlo – Her Photos” exhibition on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Running from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the exhibition’s opener will feature Perla Labarthe Alvarez, general coordinator of the Frida Kahlo Museum — La Casa Azul in Mexico, and will cover “the role of photography in the life of Frida Kahlo and the cultural importance of her art,” according to the Museum.

Tickets for the opener are $25 for Museum members and $50 for non-members and can be purchased here. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be provided and seating is limited.

Frida Kahlo – Her Photos will be featured at the Museum from Aug. 25 through Nov. 20. This will be the first time her personal photo collection is presented in Texas.

The exhibition had been locked in the bathroom of La Casas Azul for over 50 years. In 2003, the archive, which included 6,500 photographs, hidden documents and objects, was opened and examined. Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Mexican photographer and photo historian, susbequently curated this exhibition.

The photos offer a glimpse into the woman behind the artist, including “her origins and roots, her friendships and romantic relationships, her constant fight with her fragile health, her political tendencies and also, the strong role that photography played in her life and work,” according to the Museum.
