Mabee Foundation gifts $25M to Permian Behavioral Health Center

The Mabee Foundation has announced a $25 million capital gift to Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center (PBBHC).

In honor of the contribution, the mental healthy center’s principal building will be named the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center, according to Midland Health.

“The Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center will fill a long standing void by providing quality mental health resources for the entire region,” said John W. Mabee, chairman of the Mabee Foundation.

Added Russell Meyers, president of PBBHC, “We are incredibly grateful to receive this grant, placing us one giant step closer to providing this much needed service to the residents of our region.”

A groundbreaking for the 100-bed PBBHC took place in April. The hope was expressed that the facility will be open by 2025. Meyers told media at the groundbreaking that conversations about the Center began about eight years ago and that the need for mental health support only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A broad coalition of community leaders is credited with providing the resources and ideas to move the project forward, including hospital leaders in Midland and Odessa, state officials, as well as leaders from community foundations and the Permian Strategic Partnership, a coalition of 20 energy companies investing in initiatives aiming to improve quality of life in the Permian Basin.
