Midland’s Bryce Hoppel defends U.S. title in 800 meters

Midland High alum Bryce Hoppel defended his title in the 800-meter finals at the 2023 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. on Sunday.

In a highly physical race that involved shoving amongst some of the runners, Hoppel climbed from fourth place to first before managing to break free near the finish line. He clocked a 1:46.20, outpacing Isiah Harris (1:46.68) and Clayton Murphy (1:46.82).

Hoppel’s victory means he advances to the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Aug. 19-27. In a post-race interview, Hoppel expressed optimism about his chances in Budapest.

“I’m very optimistic,” Hoppel said. “Training has gone super well, I’m healthy. I’m excited. I think we can do some big things.”

Hoppel is also a three-time indoor champion in the 800-meter, in 2020, 2022 and 2023, and made it to the semifinals in the event at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
