New ECISD program pays aspiring teachers as they train, funds their bachelor’s degree

The Ector County ISD has launched a unique training program for aspiring teachers that pays them as they train while also funding their pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.

Unlike a traditional program that lasts only a few weeks, the new ECISD Registered Apprentice Program will work alongside experienced teachers for a period of years while they are in school, the district said in a statement. The program will work in conjunction with teacher development pipelines such as Future Teachers of Odessa, Odessa Pathway to Teaching and OC2UTPB Teach in 3.

“Participants will combine the classroom experience with rigorous college classwork and be better prepared to make a seamless transition into a teaching career,” the district said.

The ECISD Registered Apprentice Program aims to bolster teacher training while addressing financial barriers associated with pursuing a bachelor’s degree. The program includes generous financial support from the Permian Strategic Partnership, a coalition of 20 energy companies.

“This innovative initiative not only bridges the gap between theory and practice but also makes higher education dreams a reality,” said ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri. “Through this program, teachers can pursue a bachelor’s degree with their tuition and fees fully funded, all while actively contributing to our dynamic learning community and earning a well-deserved paycheck.”
