Odessa community mourns passing of police K-9 Maximus

He was the definition of an exemplary employee. Not just great at his job, he elevated the work of his colleagues.

And while the Odessa Police Department (OPD) had him on staff for just seven years, that’s actually a full career for a police dog.

Just as his police handlers would, K-9 Maximus is being remembered this week for his ample contributions to public safety in Odessa. On Tuesday, OPD announced it is mourning the loss of Maximus, who “crossed the rainbow bridge” due to medical problems. The post drew hundreds of comments of support from community members grateful for the K-9’s service.

Maximus served with the OPD from 2013 to late 2020 and was a dual-purpose narcotics/tactical dog, according to the OPD.

“K9 Maximus was an important member of OPD,” OPD officials said. “He was involved in the apprehension of numerous violent criminals, along with the seizure of multiple narcotics throughout his tenure.”

You will be dearly missed, K9 Maximus. We thank you for your service.

Some of his work was recognized in the media. Like when Maximus sniffed out methamphetamine in a 2017 traffic stop (CBS7). And perhaps he deserved at least partial credit when his handler, then-Corporal Tyler Rodgers (now sergeant), was named Officer of the Month in January 2018 (NewsWest9).

The community is collectively tipping its hat to a dog that gave much to the community he served.

“Run free on Rainbow Bridge Officer Maximus,” said Mary Marie Martin-Henderson. “Oh the stories you have to tell all your new Fur Friends.”

Added Nancy Raymond, “I’m sorry for their loss. Thank you Maximus for your years of service and protection. Prayers for his PD family and his home family.”

The Ector County Sheriff’s Office additionally sent out its thoughts and prayers to the OPD.
