Permian High graduate named chief of Odessa Fire Rescue

For Jason Cotton, becoming chief of the Odessa Fire Rescue (OFR) is both a dream come true, and a long time coming.

His father, Hyram Cotton, served OFR for 30 years, retiring as a senior captain, and his brother, James Cotton, also logged in 30 years, retiring as captain, according to city officials. Even his nephew, Jarret Cotton, worked for OFR.

For his part, Jason Cotton has served OFR for 27 years. He was recently named fire chief after serving as interim fire chief for the previous four months.

“His leadership has done AMAZING things for the department,” the city said.

The city further described Chief Cotton as experienced, passionate and as a man of integrity.

Fire Chief Cotton was born and raised in Odessa, graduating from Permian High, where he played football and baseball, according to the city. He also graduated from Odessa College with B.A. in Leadership Management.
