UTPB divers help make school history after qualifying for NCAA Championships

UT Permian Basin divers Carter Wood and Matthew Lenzo have joined swimmer Jazmine Tscherne in earning the right to compete at the NCAA Championships.

It’s the first time in school history that UTPB will compete for a national championship in both swimming and diving, according to UTPB Athletics.

We recently reported about Tscherne becoming the first female swimmer in UTPB history to earn a bid to the NCAA D2 Championship Meet, set for March 7-11 in Indianapolis. Tscherne’s time of 2:02.28 in the 200 backstroke at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meet earned her a 5th place finish and a NCAA Championship “B” cut, according to UTPB Athletics.

On Tuesday, March 7, Wood and Lenzo competed in the zone meet, a qualifier for the NCAAs where essentially all athletes who earned a “B” cut had to battle to make the championship meet, per Head Coach Betsy Graham. Wood placed third on the 3 meter and sixth in the 1 meter boards, while Lenzo placed ninth on both the 3 meter and the 1 meter boards, which in both cases was high enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships, according to UTPB Athletics.

Tscherne will swim on Saturday, March 11, and Wood and Lenzo will dive on Thursday, March 9 and Saturday, March 11.
