'The Stragglers' sculpture celebrates 10 years at UTPB

‘The Stragglers’ celebrates 10 years at UTPB

A prominent sculpture in front of the University of Texas Permian Basin will turn 10 years old this year.

The Stragglers, a 70-foot-long, 13-foot-tall bronze statue of a cowboy and five steers posted at Parkway and 42nd Street in Odessa, was unveiled the summer of 2014, according to a recent report by UPTB Athletics Communications Specialist Brandon Warr.

Terrell O’Brien of Fort Davis sculpted the $400,000 artwork. It was commissioned by Odessa Arts and funded by philanthropy and a gift from the City of Odessa, Warr said.

“The Stragglers tells the story of the beginning of the cattle industry in Texas as well as the life of the cowboy,” he said.

Warr reflected upon The Stragglers as part of UTPB’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.
