UTPB’s Hayden Kelly named Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of Week
“He flew all over the field.”
UT Permian Basin linebacker Hayden Kelly has been named the Lone Star Conference‘s Defensive Player of the Week following the Falcons’ 27-24 road win over Western Oregon on Saturday.
His 55-yard pick-six with the Wolves driving late in the fourth quarter sealed the win for UT Permian. In addition, Kelly “flew all over the field, setting a new career-high with 10 tackles while also recording 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack” during the win, according to the conference.
The Wolves ultimately struggled to throw over the middle, with Kelly deflecting a pair of passes as well.
The Offensive Player of the Week went to Angelo State quarterback Zach Bronkhorst, who led the Rams’ 34-14 win over West Texas A&M. Special Teams honors went to Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Gilbert Garza, who posted 11 points with perfect kicks in his team’s 43-10 win over Eastern New Mexico.
UT Permian Basin is 2-2 overall, 1-1 in conference, and next travels to West Texas A&M for a conference game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.
