Veterans to be honored throughout the Permian Basin

In the Permian Basin, veterans are honored yearround. But celebrations in their honor are particularly bountiful in and around Veterans Day.

Here’s how various parts of the region plan to honor our veterans this year.

ABILENE

Veterans Day Flag Placement Ceremony

The ceremony will take place from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m., with the colors presentation and 11th hour speech taking place at 11 a.m., at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at 7457 West Lake Road in Abilene. The event is presented by the 17TRW 5/6 Council.

CARLSBAD

The Veterans Day celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 11. The parade will leave the school administration building at 10 a.m. and head toward the Carlsbad Veterans Park, where a ceremony will take place, according to Mayor Dale Janway. Additional activities for veterans are being held throughout the week, including a special ceremony at the Alejandrio Ruiz Senior Center.

FORT STOCKTON

PCCAA Head Start

PCCAA Head Start is hosting its Veterans Day Program on Friday, Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m. If you have a veteran in your family, please consider bringing them to this event. The students have songs they will be singing honoring the military. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.  The event will take place at PCCAA Head Start, 600 South Young in Fort Stockton.

HOBBS

The Veterans Day Ceremony will start at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Hobbs Veterans Memorial Park located at 5120 Jack Gomez Blvd.

This ceremony will honor the brave soldiers who sacrificed and risked it all in service to our country.

MIDLAND

Midland College

Midland College and the Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP) invite all to celebrate those who served our country with a lengthy list of activities. The day begins at 8 a.m. with a 5K run/walk around the MC Campus Circle.

The Midland College annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place in the Physical Education Building from 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m., and then from noon-4 p.m., everyone will be able to enjoy food trucks, a petting zoo, corn hole tournament and community services fair at the Chap Center parking lot.

The Midland College Main Campus is located at 3600 N. Garfield in Midland.

American Legion Holiday Shopping

The American Legion Auxiliary at 501 Veterans Airpark Rd. in Midland will host a holiday shopping event with more than 20 vendors that will benefit local veterans from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

The event will also include food, drinks, music, a bake sale, raffles, a food drive and kids’ crafts.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4149

The Post at 409 Veterans Airpark Ln. is hosting a Veterans Day Dinner from 5 p.m. to7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. BBQ Sandwiches, brisket/pulled pork, mac and cheese, tea and banana pudding are on the menus.

West Texas Symphony

The West Texas Symphony will honor service members and showcase popular Americana repertoire on Veterans Day via “An Americana Salute to Our Veterans” Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center. ODESSA

Veterans Day Military Parade

The Veterans Day Military Parade will take place along Texas Avenue in Downtown Odessa on Saturday, Nov. 11. The American Legion Post 430 will host the parade, which begins at 10 a.m. To view the parade route, click here.

Odessa Jackalopes Military Appreciation Weekend

The Odessa Jackalopes professional hockey team will host a Military Appreciation Weekend at the Ector County Coliseum on Nov. 10-11. All active and retired military personnel, along with their families, will receive free entry into games Friday and Saturday against the Colorado Grit. Veteran Palooza runs prior to the games from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Over 50 agencies will be present providing military resources for service members, veterans and their family members in the community.

American Legion Post 430

The American Legion Post at 2701 East 8th St. will host a ceremony celebrating all veterans.

The ceremony will begin promptly on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month at the Freedom Flame at the main entrance into the Post. Major Preston A Parrott, U.S. Army retired, will speak at the event. All veterans are invited to a steak dinner in the Post canteen beginning at 4 p.m. The dinner is free for veterans and $20 for guests.

UTPB

The University of Texas Permian Basin invites the community to a Veterans Day Celebration at the UTPB Gym on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m.

Hear from local veterans and a performance from the UTPB music department. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white and blue. A light breakfast will be served.

Odessa College

Odessa College held a Veterans Day Concert & Flag Retirement Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

On Friday, Nov. 10, at 8 a.m., OC will host a Coffee With a Vet event, where at 8 a.m. the flag raising will be showed as part of the event. Come enjoy conversation with Veterans about the Veteran experience and their tales of services to our country. The event is free and open to the public and will be hosted in the foyer of the Dick & Amelia Saulsbury Conference Center.

Mural unveiling

Odessa artist Tabata Ayup will unveil a mural honoring Veterans on Texas and First on Friday, Nov. 10. Odessa Police Chief Gerke and Deputy Chief Doporto will be on hand for the unveiling ceremony.

Ayup has also done a mural at Reagan Elementary, Vagabond, and Devoted Grind.

“I feel blessed and protected in this country, especially in Odessa,” she said.

PECOS

Chamber of Commerce

The Pecos Area Chamber of Commerce/Convention & Visitor’s Bureau invites all Veterans to join them for a Veterans Day Commemorative Dinner held at the Reeves County Civic Center, 1500 Cedar St., at 6 p.m.on Friday, Nov. 10.

PBTISD

PBTISD would like to invite all local veterans to attend its Veterans Day festivities on Friday, Nov. 10 at Austin Elementary (Breakfast with Veterans from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) and Zavala Elementary (Veterans Day Program from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.). Let us honor you for your commitment and sacrifices to protecting our freedom.

SAN ANGELO

Veterans Day Parade and Concert

The 20th Annual Veterans Day Parade will take place Saturday, Nov. 11 in Downtown San Angelo at 11 a.m. The official Veterans Day Parade after-party headquarters will take place at The House of Fifi Dubois, beginning with an open silent auction and mimosas at noon, followed by live musical performances from Cade Demere, Gage McKnight and The Cold Shot Band through 5:30 p.m., when the silent auction ends and winners are announced. All proceeds benefit The All Veterans Council.
