Andrews celebrates park mural honoring local first responders

A powerful, seven-panel mural honoring first responders was recently unveiled at Legacy Park in Andrews.

The unveiling occurred as the city celebrates First Responders Appreciation Month. See video from the unveiling here and check out photos posted here by the Andrews Chamber of Commerce and CVB.

The mural, created in partnership with renowned artist Raymond A. Simon and various community organizations, was years in the making.

In 2019, the Andrews City Council passed a resolution supporting the creation of Legacy Park to commemorate Andrews County’s rich history and to honor its veterans and first responders.

Each panel of the mural depicts local first responder history, from Andrew’s first fire truck in 1945 to the brave efforts of EMS personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic. Law enforcement is represented, and the mural’s heart is an image of a horseman raising the Texas flag, symbolizing the enduring strength, unity, and independent spirit of Texas and its protectors.

“This mural is more than art—it’s a living legacy,” said Mayor Jason Harper. “It honors those who’ve worn the uniform and serves as an inspiration to future generations.”

The city’s tribute aligns with national observances this month including International Firefighters’ Day on May 4, National Police Week from May 11-17, National EMS Week from May 18-24, and Memorial Day on May 26.

A city proclamation calls on residents to reflect, express gratitude, and celebrate the community’s protectors throughout the month.

“As we walk past this wall or attend community events this May, let us remember the names, the faces, and the sacrifices,” said Councilmember [Insert Name]. “Let us make sure our heroes know how much they mean to us.”
